A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is the industry standard among Registered Nurses (RNs). The program, delivered through the University of Phoenix, provides a blend of nursing theory with the necessary practical skills every well-trained RN must have to excel in any nursing specialty. The University of Phoenix has the ability to draw faculty with high-level degrees as well as with impressive industry jobs. Faculty professionals are a component of the overwhelming success of U of P online degrees: adult nursing students seeking relevant and applicable knowledge are treated to industry specialists able to share the most up-to-date practice modalities with students.
Nursing students have perhaps some of the most fertile career territory. The BSN prepares professional RNs for a range of specialties, including Critical Care, Emergency Nursing, Geriatric, and Psychiatric and Mental Health, among dozens of others. Coursework for the major includes nursing theory, law and ethics issues, studies in community nursing, epidemiology, informatics, at-risk populations, and nursing management. This cross section of studies effectively readies a new RN for entry-level staff jobs in hospitals, outpatient clinics, community and public health, long-term care, and private office practice. Courses cost about $430 per credit hour for undergraduate nursing programs.
The University of Phoenix was founded in the mid 1970s with a primary goal to provide an alternative learning environment tailored more to the learning styles of working adults. Founder John Sperling had already engaged in studies that analyzed the learning styles of post-college age, working adults, versus the learning styles of traditional college students. Technology was creating more skilled jobs and the signs were clear that most professionals would likely not be able to compete in the work world without advanced educational training. Since then the U of P has spearheaded the online effort, which has been snubbed along the way. If nothing else, the volume of adults now seeking online degree opportunities has stifled the naysayers.
