Metropolitan Campus Draws a Global Student Body

Jacksonville University in Florida is for the most part a traditional, four-year university, where commuter and resident students engage in a high quality private education. Academic departments include three-dozen undergraduate disciplines, and five graduate and professional. Curriculum and faculty are chosen for their application to contemporary issues in business and industry. Students have the option to purse Bachelors and Masters degrees in dozens of disciplines.

In 1934 JU first opened its doors to students, as a junior college. Today a few thousand students from all over the world converge on the full-time campus. Almost all students receive some sort of financial aid, including a big chunk of institutional scholarships. There remains a very vibrant continuing education program that supports the surrounding community of adult learners, as well.

How Online Coursework is Delivered

The nursing school is also traditional, with the exception of the RN to BSN degree program. This curriculum has been put into the hands of University Alliance Online, a company that specializes in the design, delivery, and maintenance of collegiate distance learning. JU administers the academic particulars, but UA provides the integrative learning environment. About a dozen or so well known colleges and universities contract with UA for delivery of online adult degree programs. Online "classrooms" comprise streaming video, bulletin boards, and real-time messaging and chat capabilities.

On Campus Nursing School

The JU Nursing School also offers on-campus degree programs in a traditional BSN, RN to MSN, and MSN. Specialized advanced practice nurses may choose among Family Nurse Practitioner and Emergency Nurse Practitioner, nurse administrator, nurse educator, and MSN/MBA degree programs. The nurse educator program may also provide the foundation coursework for a follow-up Ph.D. in nursing.

Faculty for the online BSN program is still JU's. Nurse educators and facilitators are chosen for their abilities both in and out of the classroom. Adult distance learners crave less didactic lessons and more experiential or hands-on information. The BSN degree, however, must include a modicum of theory, especially where the core liberal arts courses are concerned.
