Health Care Industry Turning to Experienced Nurses

Like the MSN in Education, the Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) Administration also follows the lead of the nursing industry. This area of concentration has already opened up to a growing crowd of advanced degreed and very experienced nurses looking for a piece of the healthcare leadership pie. The MSN Administration through Indiana Wesleyan University Online welcomes Christian nurses seeking access to leadership positions in a variety of healthcare settings.

Administrative positions for nurses have been rare; most mid- to upper-level healthcare management professionals have had core education in business administration, but the industry is hungry for experienced practitioners-turned-leaders from the inside, and nurses fit the bill. Most have extensive experience in a range of patient care areas, as well as a distinguished array of skills. Their innate knowledge of the healthcare spectrum from the ground floor up, is a big advantage.

Other areas of business mirror this same migration--to leadership layers comprised of more granular and specialized professionals.

Requirements for Admission to the MSN Administration

Candidates for admission to the MSN Administration must have a completed Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree with at least a 3.0 GPA and a year of clinical experience behind them. Nurses must also have valid RN licenses and a highly evolved self-motivation. This program is challenging and nurses studying online will generally have to spend some time everyday engaged in studies in order to remain current with the program.

Participants are encouraged to have at least basic knowledge of computers and the ability to navigate among online environments. The IWU curriculum requires online participants to take active roles in their education; this means interaction with other students via a number of online communication tools.

Curriculum

The first set of courses that make up the degree are general Masters level nursing courses: advanced nursing research, contemporary issues in nursing, biostatistics, and healthcare ethics. Following these are the major courses emphasizing the administrative aspect of the coursework. Topics include: healthcare systems management, healthcare finance, organizational structures, and advanced management and supervising.

Career Opportunity

The sky is the limit for Nurse Administrators with their MSN degree. From this academic point, professionals may seek mid- and upper-level administrative and supervisory positions within the larger healthcare scheme or within specific facets of hospital departments or even pharmaceutical companies. Specific jobs, such as Utilization Review Supervisor and Case Manager, are common positions for nursing management.
